Default Maltodextrin?

I have a porter recipe that I plan on brewing here real soon. The recipe calls for 8oz of maltodextrin. What is this? And is it necessary? Will a batch suffer if its not used?

MD is a non-fermentable sugar that provides body. The batch will suffer.

Back when I first started I forgot to add the MD to a batch of creme stout. It tasted great, but it was watery and has no mouth feel.

Toss it in the boil. As long as it boils for ten or fifteen mintutes, you're fine.

If you brew a lot check out your local grocery/health/fitness food store. At HEB (grocery store) I got 5 lbs of maltodextrin for maybe $7. Its a complex carb that makes any beer you brew with it a good exercise recovery drink!
