Default Liquorice Note without Anise

The first time I got an anise note was with a westy 12 in Belgium.... I havent had a beer with that note since. Its kinda what got me into homebrewing, I wanted to know how they got that flavor with out using star anise. Turns out it was the Westmalle yeast at decently high temperatures.

The past week I read Farmhouse Ales by Phil Markowski.... the Biere De Garde section mention a Liquorice note multiple times, and that flavor coming from the French Strisselspalt hops.

I found a little more when I searched not sure if they are true.
Ella hops can give Liquorice notes in higher quantities.

Has anyone had any experience with Liquorice notes?

I personally haven't but thanks for the heads up on this. Normally I pull a bunch of clove like esters from Belgian yeasts. I'm not a fan of licorice so I'll work on avoiding it.

There are or is an experimental hop that has notes of licorice. I'll have to look it up. I've never aimed for it but I used anise in a clone of Sam Adams imperial white ale that called for it.
