Default Late extract addition calculations

I know we've discussed this before, but I'm not finding the information I need. Basically, how do I calculate the hops utilization for this method? So far none of the software programs seem to support this option and I'm sort of at a loss. Especially since I do partial boils and then top off. Suggestions?

The easiest way I can figure is to run your hop schedule with no fermentables added, minus the time you will have the extract in there.

Example, 60 minute boil, adding extract at the last 10 minutes.
Enter your bittering hops and put in 50 minute boil. The additional IBU gains for the remaining 10 minutes under high gravity will be hardly anything. Same thing if you add flavor hops with 15 minutes remaining, just enter that as a 5 minute boil. It's really the time the hops are boiled with no/low gravity that has the biggest affect on IBU.

If you use beertoolspro, make sure you select a utilization algorithm because it defaults to something that doesn't take gravity into account.

I do 1.5 gal boils.

My HWS only use 3% AA for 60 mins and the brew is on the sweet side of balanced as many HWs are.

The chart in TCJOHB says to use 1 gal water, 1 oz hops and 1 lb of malt for a gravity of 1.040 to obtain the max hop utilization of 30%.

When doing partial boils with a late extract addition, I would add some extract to get the wort to a basic SG similar to a full all grain boil at the beginning, say in the 1.040 range. Because of the small boil volume, it doesn't take much extract to add. Also, I have heard that the hops do better with some amount of sugars in there rather than doing straight water and you don't have to change your hop schedule/amounts too much. You can then use that SG (of the boil, pre late extract add) to calculate your utilization using the charts and formulas that are out there.

The "easy" way to do it in Beersmith is to put in the recipe twice (type the original and then "copy" it for copy 2). Then, in copy 2, change the amount of the DME (or LME) to the amount you are adding at the beginning. Look at the IBUs. They should jump way up- adjust the 60 minute hops addition to where you want it.

So, you add those hops at 60 minutes and make your recipe as written in that second recipe but add the rest of the extract at the end. Make the notes about what you REALLY did in Beersmith so you can recreate it and keep it.

I hope that makes sense- let me know if you're scratching your head trying to figure out what I'm trying to say. Brevity and clarity are NOT my strong points!

YC: Strangely, I understood... (and would have done it the same way...logically...)

Actually Lorena, I did understand, my wife speaks her own version of English as well . That's actually what I did with Promash, I think I'm happy with it so I'll give it a try... Thanks!

Yooper Chick, can you explain it again? It's not making much sense to me, and I was wrestling with this idea over the weekend.
