Default How to use hydrometer/thermometer in fermenter?

Like, if I have my wort mixed already in the fermenter, how do you go about using the hydrometer/thermometer? Do you drop the thermometer into the fermenter and then pull it out somehow? To get beer for the hydrometer flask, do you carefully pour it out of the fermenter?

Thanks for the help!

I use a sanitized turkey baster that I bought from Wally-World. Cheap and easy. Many use a wine thief.

I use a wine thief that I got from my LHBS to transfer the wort to the hydrometer flask.

Cheap plastic one was like 4 bucks, they had nice glass ones, but I think that's just something else to break ...

I use my autosiphon without attaching a hose. Just pump directly into graduated cylinder. Works like a charm.

I've found that sanitizing a hydrometer and checking the cooled wort in the kettle is easiest for me...
