I did that and it worked against me. With no drainage in the clay, I basically created a pot in the earth that held water. Thus bogging out the roots, starving them of Oxygen (which appears as a nutrient deficiancy in the plant), and finally killing 3.

Point is, be mindful of what soil you are in when using this method. It took me months to figure out that my plants weren't actually starving because of lack of soil nutrient but because the root system was shutting down and dying. Fortunately, I learned the cause before the rest were killed.

Some people need to read the previous posts better!

For my situation (and it sounds like yours too) I am going to just let it go. More roots means extra rhizomes. I will let them go, or if they overstep their bounds I will dig them up and move or sell them.

crannog ales has a great organic hop production manual. granted its for large scale production but still a great read. and seeing is for british columbia it is probably at least semi relevant to your area http://www.crannogales.com/HopsManual.pdf
