Default Definitions of Beer Styles?

I'm curious to know if there is some standardized definition of each beer type (IPA, IIPA, ESB...) I've been tinkering with beer recipe calculators and it seems that there is a lot of overlap between different types.

WTF...I thought Bass was an IPA, not a PA/ESB. When did that happen?

I'm not sure, but since I started paying attention to these things around 1999 it has always been a pale ale...

As far as homebrewing goes (at least for competitions), the BJCP guidelines are it.

As far as pro brewing, the BA and GABF use much wider guidelines, including styles brewed by homebrewers regularly that wouldn't fit outside of Specialty Beer.

Forever. Bass is a pale ale. The name, I think, has always been Bass Pale Ale.

Its not very hoppy, as it's more of a mass-produced beer.

And yeah, I've always, always known Bass as English Pale Ale/ESB.

Well, I've learned my lesson. I need to pay more attention and drink more beer. I'm clearly at the back of the class.

Bass is nowhere near an IPA. It's closer to an American Blonde.
