Default Controller probe placement

So last night I went to keg a blonde ale and found that I had about a gallon or so of a beer slushy. Where do all of you place your probes and or do you put them in water in the bottom? I currently just have them sticking straight out from the side with a fan to circulate air.

Mine is on the bottom of the freezer. No water, other than condensation.

I have mine sitting in a cup that is filled with those ice packs you get when you order yeast. It keeps it from kicking on every time I open up the keezer.
