I think that might be possible.

If you suspect tanning extraction issues, can you mash with more water and sparge less?

Sparge water temperature could also be an issue. If your sparge water is to hot that can extract tannins. I have read that above 170F will extract tannins but I think 190F would definitely extract tannins. There is another thing to consider in tannins and that is crush, if the crush is to fine and the husks are crushed to much then extracting tannins becomes easier and finely crushed husks particles can easily get through into the boil. Just a couple other items to check out.

I might be able to mash with more water, I think I am at 1.3 or 1.5 now. What is the high side # for the water/grain ratio?

I think I've read 2 qts per pound is the upper limit.
