BK, you might want to see if there is a shop near you that sells used lab equipment. I picked up a scope for a song a few years ago.

I am also thinking of getting new one also. The link above looks like a pretty good
deal at $169 with shipping. I also agree with earlier post, a mechanical stage & good
lighting is a must for cell counting.Hope this helps. Cheers!!!
