my house softener is setup to remove iron from the water, i dont think it will have much residual sodium, and i am about to test it in a bit...

can I just add some extra calcium to my water and call it a day?? I am sick of buyin large amounts of water for brewing, the stuff should just be free!!

If there is actually little Ca or Mg in the water, then it is possible that the softener could add little Na to the water when removing the iron. The problem is that this is not too common in Florida. If that water is coming from a shallow well that is not drawing water from the Floridan Aquifer, then the Ca and Mg could very well be low. There are plenty of shallow wells that have lots of iron (and frequently sulfides) that could be made useable brewing waters by ion-exchange softening. I would get that softened water tested to see what the resulting ion content is.

I live in an area with "soft" water. I generally use water out of the hose to fill the brew kettle. I put one of those RV hose filters on the end. Does that take out more minerals then I want? I use it primarily to take away chlorine taste, much like a britta filter.

Unless the filter unit has deionizing resins in it, there is no way for a filter to remove most ionic components from water. More than likely, this is an activated carbon filter unit and it can be quite effective at removing chlorine and modestly effective at removing chloramines. A very slow flow through the filter is the secret to their removing those disinfectants effectively.
