Thanks Piotr, but those PDFs in the links won't open for me. Dead links??? I appreciate any links though. Definitely want to read more.

It seems the article dissapeard from the net, what a pity. I've read it once some 2 weeks ago, among others there was an experiment how much bicarbonates you can loose using lime or by boiling. As I reall the quantities were comparable.

I've also lernt some new things about the technique of boiling to maximize the CaCO3 precipitation: it is good to stir the water during heating to introduce oxygen into it, it helps with some chemical reactions. Adding some chalk to the water also helps a lot, it serves as centers of precipitation for calcium carbonate. Afted boiling the water for some 5 min, turn off the flame, and wait until the carbonate settles down, then decant the water. Dont wait too long, because CaCO3 dissolves showly back into the solution.

I've read those links - they've disappeared and reappeared in the past. I think I might have downloaded them last time I found them. I'll look around for them.

Here's another nice (and easier read) about precipitation softening, but it isn't beer related like the dead links

precipitation softening

FWIW, I visited the Stone Brewery last Friday and the tour guide pointed out their RO system against one wall. Though I didn't ask if they built their water TOTALLY from scratch he gave that impression.
