Adding chemicals back into the wort, when to?

When is it better to add your water adjustments back into the water? Mixed up and ready to use in the mash or in the boil kettle before the boil?

They aren't chemicals. :)

Mash additions go in the mash. Sparge additions can go in the sparge water, or the boil kettle.
