Default NB Oak Barrels & Aging Lambic

I have been looking around for oak barrels to age a lambic. I am looking for a 5 gallon barrel, in particular. I see that Northern Brewer has them (http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/french-oak-barrel-5-gallon.html) but the issue would be the harshness of fresh oak on the delicate lambic profile. Are there any suggestions of how to mellow the oak before using it to age a lambic?

Make many other beers in it first.

Also, that small size might mean you will end up with too much oxygen permeability. A larger barrel has less surface area in comparison to volume. This is one of the reasons most home brewers do better using glass for long aging of beers.

steelers77 has some rum & whiskey (5 & 10gals) for less than half the price. you'll just need to use it a few times before turning it sour tho
