Wyeast 2124/ Funky sherry smell?

Hello all, I opened and activator pack of Wyeast 2124 Bohemian Lager yeast yesterday to inoculate a starter and noticed that it had kind of a funky sherry like smell to it along with a little bit of a yeasty smell. Does any one know if this is pretty normal for this strain or is there something wrong with it? The date code is 06JUL09. Thanks in advance, Al

Just for future reference, after 48 hours these yeast still have not taken off in the starter. Looks like the yeast were DOA.
