Default WLP002 English Ale - Sour Smelling Starter?

Had a 1500mL starter of DME only at around 1.040 on the stirplate for about 24 hours with WLP002 English Ale. I just pitched it, but the starter had a sour-ish smell to it.

Is that normal for WLP002? This was my first time to use this yeast. I'm pretty compulsive about sanitization and cleaning, so I'm hoping it wasn't some sort of quick starter infection.
