Default Types of wood to age on?

I've been wanting to do some kind of oak aged pale ale/IPA for a while now, so I'm in the process of creating a recipe. What are all of my options for types of wood chips to use? Is it possible to use pine at all?

I'd skip any soft wood....Especially pine. You would pickup some nasty resin compounds from the pine tar.

Oak is nice because of the vanilla like flavors it imparts, but even with oak, you don't want to run to Lows and pickup an oak 2x4 and stick it in your brew.

I am thinking that the market for oak barrels and oak chips at the LBS are what they are for a reason. I wouldn't screw around with it too much.

Agreed on pine...way too many terpines (where do you think terpentine comes from?)

I've always wondered about aging on Maple. That just sounds tasty. I know nothing about smoking-woods and aging-woods and the such, though.

I found this site for barrels, and they seem to be a pretty good deal. I want to get a 1 gallon barrel to experiment with in the near future
