Spent Grains..How long do they last?

I have been making the dog treats out of the spent grains but my question is how long can I store the grains in a air tight container in my fridge before I should throw them away?

Same topic question. How long can I leave them in my mash tun before I put them in the air tight container. I normally clean out my MT the next day but I am concerned that it was almost 100 yesterday and did not get to clean it out. Should I toss them since they have been outside in my MT for almost two days now? The lid is still on my MT.

If they were out of the fridge more than about two hours, then I'd toss them. I would never let grain sit overnight and then use it for my dog. To see what I mean, go open the MLT now and stick your nose right in it. It should stink to high heaven.

Remember, those grains never got to boiling temperature, and grain is loaded with bacteria (especially lactobacillus, giving it a sour smell). If you want to save grains, you could take a bowl and scoop it out and stick that in the fridge right away. That's what I do for my dog treats.

I will second Yooper's "stink to high heaven" remark. Did that last batch, forgetting to take out the spent grains from the kitchen and was appropriated yelled at by my fiance. Won't happen again, but I am interested in the idea for dog treats. Recipes?

Spent grains are essentially bulk, so you can add them to any dog treat recipe. Same with bread.

I usually freeze them until I can use them. You don't really need very much.

But how long will they last in the fridge?

I used the recipe on this forum.

4 cups grains
2 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter
2 eggs

Bake at 350 for 30 min then break apart and bake for an extra three hours at 250

Lactobasilus begins to form on spent grain left out within a couple hours, and it forms a milky sticky stinky gel mess. If you are not going to use it right away, many of us dump what we need into a ziplock bag and then stick in the freezer right away.

I can tell you from expereince even letting it thaw out and leaving it at room temps the lacto will form. I froze 5 pounds in a garbage back to take to see if my then girlfriends Llama's would like the treat... It had been about an hour at room temp after being thawed by the time I got to her farm...Yuck....they wouldn't even get near it.
