Default Rice syrup solids

Is there anything you can subsitute for rice syrup. I'm new to brewing but from what I have read it lightens and has no taste. Could you use say if the recipe calls for 1 pound of rice syrup , use a 1/4 pound of cane or corn sugar instead. I know you can ferment just sugar and water and this will produce a almost tasteless alcohol.

I have the same question.... Anybody know why I would spend $5 on a lb of rice solids for a Cali Common rather than just dump in a lb of table sugar?????
