Default Red Ale Idea

I was thinking about brewing up a red ale as follows:

13.5 lbs pale male 2 row
1.5 lbs 120 Crystal

1.25 oz Chinook 60 minutes
.75 oz Chinook 15 minutes
.75 oz Chinook 5 minutes

Nottingham yeast

This will be all grain. It looks like it would have a 1.074 original gravity with a final gravity around 1.017.

Alcohol by Vol. 7.4%
Bitterness 63.4 IBU
Color 18 srm

Is this a good comibination for a red ale that is approaching the ipa type bitterness? Maybe tone it down a little? I do have Cascade, Amarillo, Columbus, Mt Hood on hand as well. What do you think?

At 7.4% and 63 IBU, you're probably in the Arrogan Bastard style of beer. It's not 'approaching' IPA - it IS an IPA. Also - Chinooks are quite harsh and definately an IPA style.

Something like Fuggles/EKGs work great in a red ale.

A red ale is much milder. See my recipe for a good refreshing red ale.

Also, I would say 1.5 lbs of crystal 120 is way too much. I think 8oz would be all you need for the flavor. Use some dark malt like chocolate to make up the color.

also 18srm is more of a mahogany, kind of a dark reddish brown... not really a true red.
