Recipes 

Going to a 10% sale today and was wondering what people considered the must have grains. I am just starting all grain brewing, and have used mostly kits in the past. If the prices are right, I plan to stock up, but am unsure exactly what to get.

Base malts are probably your best bet to start off. 2-row pale malt is the usual base for most brews. Even with that said, you have a decision on what type/brand of 2-row. Marris Otter gives a different look/taste than american 2-row... You should check out some receipes that you want to make and then see what the common grains are you'll need. That's probably the best starting point.

That would cover me for most of the base correct? I like wheat beers so I think wheat is also a must.

I tend to not brew many dark beers like porters and stouts. I really like brown ales and red ales.

What do you store your grains in?

I'd stock up on 2-row, pilsner malt (if you brew styles that call for it), and MO (if you prefer to use it). I'd also want to keep several pounds (5-10) of Munich, Vienna, and a light and dark crystal malt.

Those grains would cover the bases for a lot of different styles.

I store my grain double-bagged in Rubbermaid containers.

First things first: do you have a grain mill yet? If you do not and you have to buy pre-crushed malt, the malt has a much shorter storage time and you'll not want to buy more than 1-2 batches worth of malt.

Here is how I store mine. Some leave it in the sacks that it comes in. More important than what it is stored in, is the environement. Bug, rodent free, temp. and humidity controlled is a plus. Mine is stored inside the home, not in the garage, in these sealed sacks.

A European Pilsner, an English Pale malt, Vienna, C-60 and Pale Wheat are probably the one I use the most.
