So I had a little bit of left over grain and DME and decided to just mess around and brew up a 0.75 gallon test batch of Barley Wine.

It ended up being pretty damn good. Now if I were to do this for real, I'd probably ad some more hops and get the IBUs up more to 40.. Its pretty malty, but I like that and Im not a huge fan of hops.

But overall pretty good beer. Pretty strong.

Heres what I used converted to 5 gallons:

5.00 lb Wheat Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 38.86 %
3.33 lb Aromatic Malt (26.0 SRM) Grain 25.91 %
1.07 lb Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM) Grain 8.29 %
0.80 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 6.22 %
2.80 oz Hallertauer [4.80 %] (60 min) Hops 36.0 IBU
2.67 lb Candi Sugar, Dark (275.0 SRM) Sugar 20.73 %
1 Pkgs Nottingham Yeast (Lallemand #-) Yeast-Ale


Est Original Gravity: 1.089 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.021 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 8.98 %
Bitterness: 36.0 IBU
Est Color: 65.8 SRM

btw, when I make this for real, should I use Fuggle hops?

Im thinking if I did this for real I'd do something like this:

6.00 lb Light Dry Extract
3.00 lb Aromatic Malt
1.00 lb Chocolate Malt
1.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L
3.00 oz Fuggle
2.5 lb Candi Sugar, Dark
2 Pkgs Nottingham (or even a Belgian Strong yeast like 1388 or WLP570?)

Not a million miles off my 'leftovers, base malt, oats, dme plus sugar' old ale/barleywine'. 6 weeks in bottle and first test tonight thanks to you...

...not bad. Malty, treacley, but not bad. Here's to Christmas and the next tasting at Dantoberfest.
