Hops, oh Hops, which ones to use in my next IPA
|
|
Gents,
Our last beer, American Pale Ale, hopped with all Cascades and most coming in the last 10 minutes of the boil, came out great. We are brewing up a Sierra Nevada Stout clonish beer this weekend, and next up will be an IPA of some sort or another.
I found 6 oz of Amarillo hops in my freezer this morning...forgot they were there, so I would like to use them near the end of the boil. We also have 5 oz of Chinook and 12oz of Goldings and 5oz of fuggles. I can also get my hands on Nugget and Saaz over here.
So I am looking for some ideas on which hop(s) to pair up with the amarillo as well as a hop schedule, including dry hops.
Thanks!

Chinook and amarillo sounds like a tasty combo for an american ipa.

Why not an English IPA? Or better yet, an Old Ale with the Goldings and Fuggles - a nice Winter Warmer.
Next time I'm in Beijing I may have to look you up. The food there is fantastic and the people are really cool - but I found that the beer SUCKS!

Let me know and I'll show you around the city! Do you come over often? I have a great place for good beer!
I think we are going to go with the American IPA. I'll have to sort out a grain bill next.
Was thinking about a continuously hopped IPA - starting off with the Chinook at 60 (going down to FO) and then adding in 2oz of Amarillo in the last 5 minutes (down to FO) and then dry hopping with 3oz of Amarillo and an ounce of Chinook.
Thoughts?

I wish I got over more often. I work for an Ag Chem company, so although our offices are in Beijing, most of our actual work is done in the agricultural regions - and much like the US that includes most of the rest of the country.
As to hops, I like Chinook quite a bit (I've got it growing in the backyard) but it can be pretty in your face - though it might be a real nice compliment to the Amarillo.

What would you propose as a hop schedule? We would like to try a continuously hopped beer. (And this is going to be a 10 gallon batch) Perhaps Nugget, then Chinook, then Amarillo? With Chinook and Amarillo also in the dry hop?

I was actually thinking adding equal parts for bittering flavor and aroma,im pretty shure they are all good like that but have only used them a few times, but i gennerally love these hops in commercial and my beers.I maybe would do chinnook bittering and aroma but the rest everything, although it would be fun to do diffenernt batches reaaranging them. Just watch you ibu's in your first 30 min additions.
Your continusly hop idea sounds good i would do that with this in a pinch.I think i may do that next ipa i have all of these. I dont think you will lose no matter how you go about it.I would definatly get amarillo for flavor and aroma if you dont like herbal spicy from the nugget chinook. The characters vary so its not always so black and white as far as descriptions.

Why is it that all of my frozen hops dissapoint me on hop flavor and aroma? I can't be the only one having this problem?
Regarding the original question, amarillo, cascade and citra is a good combo for me.
