Default Hop Breeding

I've recently been trying to educate myself on hops and water minerals. This allows me to not study about medicine even though I'm taking the boards in 2 weeks. Anyways my question..... is the current trend to breed hop varieties with higher alpha acids with the same flavor/aroma as lower alpha acid hops? Seems like new varieties are being bred just didn't know where the trend was heading. Thanks!

The trend is towards High Alpha hops as this results in more bittering compounds per acre. OSU has been the focus for hop breeding in the US. They have a monster 19.8% hop waiting to be released. Flavor and aroma is less subject to controlled breeding.

More than you'll ever want to know about hop breeding.
