Thinking about brewing this tomorrow or next weekend, and was wondering if anyone had feedback or suggestions on this recipe. I'm using #3 tweaked for a 5.25 gallon batch. In particular, I'm curious about the WLP001 - which I've used before, but was expecting this recipe to call for a wheat style yeast.
Name: Three Floyds GumballHead Clone
Type: All Grain
Batch Size: 5.25 gal
Boil Size: 6.71 gal
Boil Time: 60 min
Est Original Gravity: 1.055 SG
Bitterness: 28.2 IBU
Est Color: 5.5 SRM
Equipment: Brew Pot (7.5 gal) and Igloo Cooler (10 Gal)
Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.00
Ingredients
5.00 lb Wheat Malt, US (2.0 SRM) Grain 48.78 %
4.50 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 43.90 %
0.75 lb Caravienne Malt (22.0 SRM) Grain 7.32 %
0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (First Wort Hop) Hops 7.0 IBU
0.25 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (60 min) Hops 6.3 IBU
0.50 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (15 min) Hops 6.3 IBU
1.50 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (5 min) Hops 7.6 IBU
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (1 min) Hops 1.1 IBU
0.50 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 5.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs California Ale (White Labs #WLP001) Yeast-Ale
1.50 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (Dry Hop 7 days)
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [7.50 %] (Serving Keg)
Going with a single-infusion for 60 @ 153F
Cheers!

Brewed this on 5/1/11
Ended up mashing at 152 and forgot to take a OG reading (too many brews while brewing), but based on my pre-boil I figure I was pretty close to target. My amarillo's were around 11%, so I had to make some hops adjustments. Also, they smelled really spicy which I don't recall noticing from other brews that used amarillo.
Never had the original, but trying to get some wheat beers into the pipeline for summertime. Will report back in a few weeks.

These recipes aren't gumballhead. The malts include pale, wheat and aromatic. The hops are amarillo, warrior and simcoe. It is in Brewing with Wheat.

Not sure yet, I've been brewing more than I can drink lately (didn't think that could happen) so this has been in primary since 5/1. I plan to keg it tonight or tomorrow, but have to make some room in the kegerator before I'll know how it fared.
A friend from Indiana was kind enough to bring me some of 3 Floyds this weekend, but unfortunately the store she went to was out of Gumball Head so I won't be able to do a real comparison

Well according to 3 Floyds web site (and the bartender at the brewery), it is an all amarillo addition:
"An American Wheat Ale, Gumballhead is named in honor of the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers. Initially a seasonal summer beer, now brewed year round due to demand. This beer helped redefine American Wheat Beers. Brewed with Amarillo Hops and a generous portion of American red wheat, Gumballhead has a complex hop aroma with notes of grapefruit, lemon zest, marmalade and peach. These flavors combined with low bitterness make Gumballhead a refreshing American Wheat Beer that doesn’t suck."

All Amarillo additon when? The whole beer? All I know is in the book Brewing with Wheat it is not how the recipe was outlined by 3F....but who knows, perhaps someone is full of it?

Finally got around to kegging this a couple days ago. It's almost carbed up and already tasting awesome. I dry hopped with 1.5oz (leaf) for 5 days after primary, but didn't end up adding the serving keg hops. For now the amarillo is still smelling/tasting great, but I may end up dropping a bag in the keg if it mellows. SWMBO downed more than one glass last night which says good things.
Don't have the real GBH to compare it to, but this is good enough that I'll be brewing it again for sure.

How long of a primary did you ride on this one? I usually let mine brews go for 3 weeks or so, but I'm aware that wheats can turn around much faster.
