Default Is it the grains??? Golden Promise

Had a really tasty wee heavy recently, Otter Creeks (Middlebury, VT.) Otter Kilter. Admittedly I have not had any other commercially produced wee heavies (though would like to if anyone can recommend)

It seemed to be quite good for what I understand the style to be. It had a flavor unlike anything I have ever tasted and I enjoyed it alot. They claim the special flavor is due to the type of barley used and extra long boil time for carmelization. The grains were Golden promise (I believe, can not remember for sure) and they said it was a native strain of barley to Scotland.

It was so distinctive a flavor that it has me wondering if it was the grains or the carmelization that I am really tasting. Someday when I am back on track brewing wise I hope to try my hand at brewing another wee heavy. I would have to special order Golden Promise as my LHBS does not have it. Or would I still get the same flavor with say Maris Otter and a 90-120 minute boil? Also, how much water and grain would you add extra to compensate for the long boil?

Try a nice single malt scotch. It should taste similiar.

I suspect the flavor either comes from the grain being grown in peaty soil or being malted with a peaty fire.

Highland Brewery out of NC (I believe Asheville?) has a wee heavy in the bottles. Its ok, I'm not a big fan of their beers, but others disagree with me greatly.

What is there distribution like? Maybe when I am down in D.C. this summer for my brothers wedding I will check it out.

As to Scotch, afraid I am not much of a liquor drinker. I used to drink bottom shelf scotch, not anymore. Something that strong how do you taste the grains anyway?
