Free Cascades?
|
|
A buddy who used to brew never used any of the Cascade hops he planted. He picked me about 3.5 oz a few weeks ago and dried them. Obviously, no idea as to AA, but I threw them into Reciprocator 2.2 and came up with this. ( I used ~5%AA).
Comments? Should I go a bit lighter (8lb 2-row/1.045)?
Free Cascades Pale Ale
Brewer: Rusty Kettle Brewing
Beer: Free Cascades Pale Ale Style: American Pale Ale
Type: All grain Size: 6 gallons
Color: 6 HCU (~5 SRM)
Bitterness: 25 IBU
OG: 1.050 FG: 1.012
Alcohol: 4.9% v/v (3.8% w/w)
Grain: 9 lb. American 2-row
1 lb. American Munich
1 lb. American crystal 10L
.75 lb. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
Mash: 70% efficiency
Boil: 75 minutes SG 1.043 7 gallons
Hops: 1 oz. Cascade (5% AA, 60 min.)
.5 oz. Cascade (5% AA, 25 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (5% AA, 10 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (5% AA, 3 min.)
Thanks,
Dave

You should go less two row is you want a lower OG.
I have no idea what you want, but the recipe sounds good to me.

4% would probably be more sessionable to some... but I think 1.05 gives you more flexibility if the hops were for some reason really strong.
as is, the recipe is dead in the balanced range.
I would probably go less crystal and more munich. But I have a little munich/vienna love affair. maybe 1.5 to .5.
I would drink it. I think it will have a ton of flavor. My home grown did.

You probably want to use just Cascades, but what about bittering with something like a 1/2 oz of Magnum and saving all the cascades for late additions? Maybe move that 60 min addition all the way to flame out. Just a thought.

I'm with Yankeehillbrewer. Use a hop you know the alpha acid of for bittering and then use all your home grown hops for flavour & aroma.
How do the Cascades taste anyway? are they like Oregon's finest?

They were tasty but very tame, which is why I decided to secondary a couple of ounces of pellets. Tastes great!
