Dryhopping: How Much Hops & How Long
|
|
I've dryhopped before, but what do you guys think about the dryhopping schedule for this particular IPA I brewed the other day? I was thinking at least an ounce of Cascade for 2 weeks. Your thoughts?

At least. I've gone up to 2 ounces. Two weeks is about right.

The whole leaf hops are a pain to get into the carboy and will soak up alot of beer. Just to warn you.

I just kegged my 121 IBU IPA which was made with a total of 8 oz of Cascade whole leaf hops. I dry hopped with 2 oz of the whole leaf cascade. I did ferment about 5.5gals and after the dry hop in the seconday I was just shy of 5 gallons of finished product. The ABV is only 5.1% but this is the best tasting brew I have made to date, and it is not even carbonated yet. If you like hops, and I am guessing that you do, go for the 2 oz.

When dry hopping two weeks is about as long as you'll want to leave the hops in. I use kegs for clearing, so I can just suspend a bag of hops in the keg and if it isn't enough, replace it. My Bent Rod Rye (3.6 ABV) was dry hopped with three different hops: cascades, fuggles, then EKG. Each for a week and only 1/2 oz. at a time. I was sneaking up on it.

The Cascade Pale Ale I just made was 1oz at 60 min, .5oz at 15 minutes, .5 oz at flame off, and 2oz dry after two weeks going into secondary. Its going to stay in there for 10 days dry hopped, then into a tertiary for a couple days to clear up before bottling.

The brewmaster who I get yeast from put a dryhopped ale on cask last night at his pub. Damn good stuff. I gotta say, cask ale has its place...it was so creamy and delicious, and the hop aromas were just magical.
