The title pretty much sums up the question. When I went to my local HBS they told me I could do almost 1 pound dried for 3 pounds regular but my local HBS is pathetic to say the least. Any insight?
That is not right from what I have learned. Liquid malt extract has around 80% of the potential of dried malt extract.
Conversion formula for grain to extract I was given is as follows:
LME= .75 X Grain weight
DME= .6 X Grain weight
This may not always end up exact but it will be close. To answer the original question 1# DME ≠ 1# LME
The formulas above comparing the malt extracts to grain are correct. If you want to convert directly from liquid to dry, divide by 1.25. Obviously, going from dry to liquid, multiply by 1.25.
Hmmm... I haven't had to do this yet, but the formulas I've saved off are:
• LME / DME conversions
○ LME to DME * 0.89
○ DME to LME * 1.10

It may vary brand to brand, but Briess LME is 80% solids, so for them 1lb LME = 0.8lb DME
My regular malt extract is dried, so for me, yes it is 1:1
