Dextrose + Yeast Nutrients = Starter?

When your yeast have an abundance of simple sugars to use for energy, that's all they'll use, and when they reproduce, the next generations will be less and less able to metabolize maltose, which is what you want them to do in your beer.

So by giving them simple sugars instead of maltose, you'll be effectively selecting for yeast that are better able to metabolize simple sugars.
