Default Curious about buying kits and or using "recipes"

I am just curious what everyone does when they buy a pre made kit and or use a recipe that calls for a specific finish wort amount, other than what you have dialed your system in for. For example, I plan to transfer ~5.5g of beer to primary so that way by the time I am done with secondary and get ready to transfer to keg I am damn near right at 5 g with all the losses to trub etc. If buying a kit from say AHBS that lists in their instructions it will make "5 g" of beer do they just roll with whatever they end up with and follow the "instructions" to a "t" or do they vary from said instructions? When I look on here for a recipe that says the finish about is 5 gallon to transfer I scale the recipe to accommodate my 5.5 g finish about to make sure I keep to the recipe specs. What does everyone else do?

The way I use their kits, they split it into 3 different liquid additions, 2 gal if there is grains with the extract than add 1 gal.......it says do the boil with 3 gal then add 2 later in the process after the boil. With each of these I always add maybe 1/4 gal or so and since I have done this I've been right at or just over 5 gal when all is said and done

I brew all grain, so wondering about that method as well. Makes sense. I figure with "prefab" kits it is what it is and you are at the kits mercy if you buy. If you copy the kit I guess you can scale. Just curious what others have done or do.

I plug the kit inventory into beersmith, adjust for my higher efficiency and add additional base malt if needed to hit the correct O.G., also possibly reducing the hops if the IBU's get thrown out of whack.

I was messing around with my brew software. I was plugging the recipe in based on what they called for, for a batch amount. I would then scale the recipe to match my batch amount. This makes the most sense to me.

With Austin, you know exactly what is in the kit before you order it. I just got their Apocalypso and Dead Guy kits. The Apocalyso was a little light on the grains for me, so I added some base malt. The Dead Guy kit was real nice. It was exactly what I might pick out if I was making my own recipe. The only thing I added to that was their booster.

Beer kits in a box are different. I only made two of those when I was first starting out. You can do much better ordering online from many suppliers.

Got that and understand that. I was talking about if I ordered one of the "pro series" kits from Northern Brewer or one of the "master" brewer sets from more beer. They are prefabbed and prepackaged by the brew master, so I am assuming I have to run with what they have. Now when I pull up a recipe on HBT I just adjust according to my needs. I am assuming this is what everyone does.

Yes, of course. And with any online suplier you can always add a little to tweak it with your own brewing needs.
