Bitter recipe critique..
|
|
Here it is:
5 lb US Pale Ale Malt
5 lb UK Maris Otter Malt
1 lb US Caramel Munich 60L
.5 lb US Carapils
1 oz - 60 min - Williamette
1 oz - 30 min - Tettnang
.50 oz - 15 min - Williamette
.50 oz - 15 min - Tettnang
1.5 oz - 0 min - Williamette
1.5 oz - 0 min - Tettnang
.50 oz - 15 min - Irish Moss
WPL001 - California Ale - Decanted a 2qt starter
I know, I know... Before you say anything about the California Ale yeast... I heard that yeast is similar to what Red Hook uses, and I love their ESB!
What do you think?

Bitter, pale ale, amber ale, ESB, Altbier, etc. You have sort of blended them all together there (English name, some English malt, some US Malt, US yeast, US bred English hop, German hop, German caramel malt). Unless you want to enter it into some specific BJCP category, then it looks good to me. Should be a nice drinkable ale.
Personally, I hate throwing ounces of hops in at the end. Seems like a waste and you get so much gunk in the kettle/fermenter. I really minimize late additions and dry hop for aroma and flavor.

Looks pretty similar to BYO's clone recipe. Big difference is they use Irish Ale yeast, not sure why?

Just so you know, it's "Willamette" after the river in Oregon that runs through Portland, not after someone named "William".

Well thank you for correcting me. I don't know what I would have done without your help.

You're welcome. No reason to take offense.

Might be a beer that you'll enjoy, but have to agree that if you're looking for a bitter it's not to style. Along with what's been said, there will be too much hop aroma from the large amount of hops at flame out.

Well Matt, you get a non-sarcastic thank-you from me. I’ve spelled this wrong many times and not realized it. The OCD in me would rather be corrected than find my screw up down the road.

Glad I didn't offend you! Wasn't my intention in the first case either.

I'd ditto dropping the 0 minute adds. Way out of style. Late (aroma) hops additions are the major difference between Bitters and Pales. As posted, it's an IPA.

I think it will be a nice clean beer with a crazy german hop spiciness. Brew it and let us know how it turns out!
