I have some hops that have been sitting in my freezer now for a few years. I have beer smith and use the hops aging tool to adjust the AA% and change the amounts use accordingly.
Its mostly Galena and Nugget from 2011.
I am wondering if these are not the greatest to use for flavor or aroma.
Should I stick with using these strictly for bittering?
I would definitely use them for bittering additions. I would also use them in a forgiving style like stout, porter etc. Just to qualify myself, I have no experience using old hops.
I would definitely open them up, let them get to room temp and smell them before doing anything. If they smell like old socks or wet sneakers or just plain nasty I would toss them in the compost pile.
If they smell like nice fresh hops then go ahead an use them
I can see reading this forum that I still have a lot to learn about making beer, there are like so many options to do things
