I make mine during the mash in while waiting (Gives me something to do). The only difference is I don't let it harden and keep adding 1-2 tablespoons of water until the end when I bring the temp up for a few min. Then I add about 2 cups of water to dilute it and keep it liquid, or if I'm ready to mash out I use that instead of water.
So I guess the short answer to the question is, I add it at the beginning.
