I think the title says it all. I am looking for a good black IPA recipe. I have had the Basha by Stone/Brewdog and it is one of my favorites. I have also had Otter Creaks as well. If anyone could help I would be greatful.
:)

This is an Imperial Black IPA I did which came out great. One thing I did notice is that the hop aroma/flavor subsided significantly through the month it took me to drink it. I wanted it to be around 9% ABV but with my new grain mill and a 90min mash I got over 80% efficiency and according to my calculation I got 98% attenuation which seems unrealistic but my OG was 22 Brix and my FG was 9 Brix.

I have recipe that I think came out really nice--hoppy, grapefruity but with a little roasty character, the color belies the flavor--BUT you can only have it if you promise to call it a Cascadian Dark Ale :D

I grew up in the NW and despite living in Texas I think it is an appropriate and well deserved homage to our hops growing brethren of Cascadia...CDA just rolls off the tongue nicely as well!!!

Brewed it right after my Rangers beat those damn Yanks... Yankee Killer Texas CDA

dogphish - i just bottled that recipe yesterday. all signs are positive that it's going to be really solid.

thank you!

No need to give me credit, it is based on a Widmer Bros. Pitch Black (W-10) recipe! Just rock the CDA moniker and its all good:mug:

I used the Nelson Sauvin b/c I read somewhere that it is part of Widmer's proprietary hop blend...not sure about that (does get away from the CDA but even Widmer calls it a BIPA) but it tastes great!

FG Estimate: 1.014 SG

Solid IPA with subtle roast character from the Special Roast. The hops yield a whole different flavor profile in this brew. I brewed a Drifter pale ale at the same time with the same hop blend and it is one of my best beers to date but the hops come across differently with the darker grains.

Enjoy!

Take this recipe subtract the C-60 and add .75 lb carafa II per 5 gallon. Same hop schedule.

It's a winner. The Amarillo/Simcoe go very well with the roasted noted in a black IPA.:mug:

I've been drinking up my supply of my own black IPA. i posted a recipe for it here. give it a shot. it's a beast of a beer though. all who've had it have liked it. i can't stop drinking it.

I made one lately with the Pliny hop schedule... grain bill was 11# 2-row, .5# Crystal 80, .5# de-bittered black. It was a hit with my brew club this weekend.

This recipe came out ridiculously good, I'm sad I only have two bottles left. It's based on pliny but black and slightly roasty. This was my first batch that really made me say 'wow' and believe that I'm finally good at hobby. It's a big imperial black ipa.

Northern Brewer sells a nice Black IPA kit. It is very good - very hoppy at first but mellowing nicely 2 1/2 months after start.
