Default Anchor Porter Clone

Hey folk, new to the forums. I am looking to try my first all-grain brew soon. After looking at a few suggestions over the internet, I've put a recipe together for an Anchor Porter clone and like some input:

11lbs 4 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US
13 oz Chocolate Malt
12 oz caramel/crystal Malt- 60L
6.0 oz Cara-Pills
4.0 oz Black (patent) Malt
1 oz Roasted Barley

.47 oz Northern Brewer (first wort addition)
.47 oz Cascade (45 min)

1 Wyeast 1272

I have the est. o.g at 1.069; IBU at 20; color at 35.2

How does it look?

Thanks!

I haven't had Anchor Porter...your recipe looks like it will make a good Porter though! The Cascades @ 45 min won't add any flavor at all, I'd just get all the IBUs from the NBs, simpler that way. Save the Cascades for a Pale Ale or an IPA. I like to use NB hops in my Porters and typically do a 60 min addition and a small addition at 20 mins for between 20-26 total IBUs.

I thought the porter was all Northern Brewer; I'd ditch cascades as well.

Thanks everyone. I'll ditch the cascades and replace them with Northern Brewer. Should I still plan for a 45min addition of NB or wait for a much later hop addition?

45 min additions serve no purpose. Anything under 20 won't add much if any flavor (and zero aroma), just bitterness, but be less efficient at bittering than a 60 min addition. 60 mins for bittering. 20 mins for flavor (some like 15), 5 mins for aroma (or at flameout.)

Personally for Porters I either just do a 60 min addition and that's it (not caring about any hop aroma or flavor), or I may do a small 20 min addition to get just a tad bit of hop flavor. IPAs are a whole 'nuther story. For those I do a small 60 minute addition, then slam it with hops from 20 minutes down to flameout, then dryhop.

AHS was spot on in a side by side test, the most accurate clone I've tasted. While I used White Labs California Ale WLP001, AHS's alternative is Wyeast American Ale 1056.
