Default Abtanum Hops?

Anyone ever hear of these? I'm looking to do a clone of Stone's IPA, and wondered where to get them/when to use them. Here's a link: http://www.stonebrew.com/ipa/

This is WAAAAYYYY off-topic, but you know how sometimes you think about something you haven't thought about in ages? I thought about the movie short circuit a few days ago, downloaded the movie and watched it last night. Then today I see Johnny 5 on your avatar. So flippin' wierd!

And, sorry, haven't heard of them thar hops.

EdWort posted a clone for this beer. Looked good from the picture. I don't think it included Abtanum. I bet you could skip them.

But really...anyone ever heard of these? I'm a big fan of Stone IPA...I'd like to make it a house brew if I can get the ingredients/technique down. Lord knows I'm spending $6.99 on a six pack.

I read that they used Magnum....some have said for the boil, as a bittering hop.

Their font is weird. It is Ahtanum. see: http://www.brew365.com/hops_ahtanum.php

Magnum is a high alpha hop, almost always for bittering.

Northern Brewer sells Ahtanum pellets and HopsDirect sells whole leaf. From the description posted by the vendors, it sounds like they are an American-style flavour/aroma hop similar to Cascade or Amarillo.

Maybe it's my aging taste buds & sense of smell, but I don't think of Cascades & Amarillo as being similar, other than they both have citrus notes.

I have never used Ahtanum, but everything out there says they are closest to Cascade and Amarillo. Didn't mean to imply that Amarillo and Cascade were substitutable.
