this is really helpful info- much thanks to you all. i opened my barrel, smelled good, looked good. i'm still waiting on my stout to finish, so in with a bottle of bourbon! no leaks, and really looking forward to using the thing!

I was thinking the same thing, but my wife thinks it's "cute" so I'm considering setting it up to dispense real ale. A few properly sized holes and it could work pretty well.

A friend who has aged in rum barrels said after the third batch the oak is about gone. I'll take it one beer at a time.
