Default Something you've always wanted but won't buy yourself....

Alright, maybe a dumb question, but what is one (or a few) brewing items that you've always wanted but haven't bought yourself.... or were reluctant to buy. Or did buy and wished you'd bought sooner...

My Dad and I both are pretty new to the brewing world. I've got 4-5 brews down, he's on probably 10. All extract to this point, but both of us will likely go all grain with experience.

I need a Christmas idea for him... and want to get him something that he'd probably be too cheap to buy himself but that he'd really enjoy having.

Carboy washer! I told myself scrubbing and rinsing with a hose or sink was easier. I can promise it is not! And also a wert chiller (love it)

No matter what style you brew, full boils are great....so a turkey fryer or similar rig plus a CFC or plate chiller would be used now and still part of the brewery down the road.

Put the pressure on to go AG with a grain mill

It's hard w/ extract and I'm assuming you are inside-- that eliminates about 90% of gadgets, but I'll do my best:

< $50 = Bigger Pot, Glass Carboy (assuming he's using plastic), temperature controller (if he has spare fridge), Flask and/or Stirplate for Making Yeast Starters, Water Filter, PBW and Starsan Mix, a new homebrew ingredient kit (a good one from MoreBeer).

50 - 100 = Oxygenation System, Cooler/Kegs for going All-Grain, Chiller

100 + = KEGGING SYSTEM! That is the ultimate homebrew present, yet costly.

Oxclean saves needing to scrub your carboys...though jet washer is handy..

HOP-HEAD, probably one of the "gizmos" that I personally would never get around to buying but would love to have would be a refractometer.

See being all practical and ****, I tell myself why get one when a hydrometer works just as good, and is cheaper...BUT if I got it as a gift I probably couldn't live without it..

But if you guys are starting out then make sure you got the basic necessities covered, like a wort chiller.

I envy you and your dad being into this hobby together, at least you won't have to prolly worry about what to get each other for gifts ever again...I mean after you guys get done buying all the nifty gear and toys, if you end up getting stuck you can always give each other gif certificates to LHBS for ingredients.

A nice grain mill is a good suggestion, as well as a larger volume boil pot. I'm not sure if you guys bottle or keg your beers, but for around 200 dollars you can get a full kegging kit. That would save you a ton of time that could have been spent pre-heating mash water and doughing in your first all grain batch... If you guys are still brewing on the stovetop, I'd definitely suggest a turkey fryer... the SQ14 is only 50 bucks at home depot right now...

Revvy, Any thoughts on this one? For this price I could get him a beer kit or another gatchet to go with it. Or do suppose that this another case of "you get what you pay for"?

I'm no expert on them, I think that wouldn't work becasue it's testing salinity.

Bobby M posted a link to me in a thread to one he recommeded, let me see if I can find it.
