I was at the local junk store the other day (Job Lots) and I found this ¼ HP submersible pump. Initially, I was using it with my plate chiller, then I found a couple more great uses for it. I brewed today, and I filmed the pump in action. Most of these ideas I've gotten from this site, just wanted to post the videos.
The video quality isn't the best, and by the last one, I'd had a few too many of my last batch, but anyway, here goes:
Wort Chilling. - I use a ice water bath. I run the return line into a frozen gallon jug to keep the water in the ice bath cold. As you can see, I can get a temp of 49°. I actually have to slow the flow rate out of the brew kettle to keep it about 60°.
Plate Chiller Cleaning - After I get the beer from the brew kettle to the carboy and pitch my starter...I attach to ½" to barb hose connection to the wort side of the plate chiller, add some warm water and oxyclean and let it run for about 10 minutes...the shift the flow direction for another 10 minutes. Works like a champ and is ready to go for the next time.
Carboy Cleaning - I saw this method on this site and thought I would give it a try. I built the frames out of some scrap 2x4 I had laying around. That is a 3 gallon carboy, so I use the second frame. For the 5 and 6 gallons carboys, I use just one frame.
