No, you really don't. It causes wort to spurt out of the top and you can't establish a reading either.

Sounds good, I guess I'll add that to my list of things to build. Sounds simple enough though.
@Motobrewer...I never thought about that, but I like to use my sight glass to monitor my boil off rate so I can throttle up or down the boil to reach my desired final volume. Thats hard to do if its boiling in there. I guess there might be a slight contamination issue?

Basically thats what I did, but I leave a little space between the bottom of the fitting and the foil so air can circulate around it.
I think what Bobby is talking about is to use a small piece of aluminum flashing, and put a hole in it so it fits over the nipple like the washer, and then bend a 90º angle in the flashing so it blocks the flame from heating up the fitting...

That's right. Lowes sells aluminum step flashing for something like 50 cents each which is the cheapest way to get a small piece of 20 gauge (guessing) aluminum sheet.

Do you have a pic of the flashing installed?

Man I saw this thread and got all excited thinking Bobby had them back in stock, until I actually looked at the date of the first post. Guess i'll be waiting a little longer.

I have two shipments of thermometers arriving in the next week. The best thing to do is to put your email on the newsletter signup so you'll know exactly when they are back in.
