Default Removing Stuck Swing-Top Gaskets

Two swing-tops that I acquired have the gaskets stuck on hard. I managed to pry/tear the gaskets off, but a good bit of the red rubber was left behind. I'm looking for ideas on how to get that stuff of the white lid (plastic lid, not porcelain). If the stuck rubber were not on something that will contain a food item, I'd use lighter fluid as a solvent, but the taste/smell from that stuff never goes away.

Any ideas?

I'd soak it in a mixture of hot water and Oxyclean and let it sit for an hour or two.

That did soften the rubber bits, but it still took a lot of elbow grease! Thanks.
