Ready to brew... with no free fermenter!

Title says it all. My carboys are tied up in a 2-month porter (at ~10 days) and a 4-month cider (at 6 weeks), and I want to start my blonde ale this weekend. 
Do I get another carboy (expensive) or an ale pail (cheap)? Last time I brewed in plastic I got a weird aftertaste in my beer (which went away with aging).

I would suggest the aftertaste was related to something other than the plastic. Personally I use only buckets for primary. When I do bother to secondary I use better bottles.
So I would pickup a couple buckets so you don't get stuck in this horrible situation again!  |

PET plastic carboy ( website). The first time I had a carboy crack on me I ditched them all in favour of better bottles and haven't looked back, I love them! |

My LHBS sells Better Bottles for $27.50, carboys for $43, and fermenting buckets for $15. I'm thinking someone's jacking prices a tad... Especially when I know I can get a food-grade bucket and lid from Wal-Mart for $5.00...

Then get a couple foodgrade buckets (You can even get them for free is you ask at the bakery counter for icing bucket. Just make sure you have a good sealing lid, then punch them and put a gasket for an airlock in.) Just make sure they hold about 7 gallons...you need headspace, remember.
Those prices are pretty much the going rate these days for the 3 types of fermenters you mentioned. Glass Carboy prices have doubled in the last few week (search for the threads for an explanation.) The lhbs in my area sell the better bottle for about the same price as yours, and the average price for Ale Pails in my area is 12-15 bucks...so noone's Jacking prices anymore than any other lhbs, or mail order place.

Personally, I don't see any reason not to go ahead with an Ale Pail. I actually enjoy when I ferment a batch in there because it makes aeration VERY easy. FWIW, if I'm going to deal with the small neck it's going to be glass.

Get whatever you can get cheapest...and buy more than you think you'll need.
We don't want you back here in 2 weeks complaining that the 6-week IPA you just brewed has tied up your third and final fermenter...and you're ready to brew again...
