i hav a cheap burner now with a five gallon tank and being a poor college student i cant really afford to get a back up. What can i do to maximize my tank life and how many before i hav to giv up on it(i would hate to run out half way thru a boil) It takes about a half hour to get a boil on full blast then i cut to almost nothing to maintain a rolling boil for an hour, i never do 90 min boils.

I'm in the UK so my experience will be a little different.

I use a 14kg bottle.

I got 6 brews out of the last one and it's not dead.

I have one in my patio heater so can swap over if I need and I also have a 5kg bottle for camping which can always help me finish a boil.

My burner is a lot smaller in BTU than most. 27000btu but it does the job and boils up in under 30 minutes. I don't think I could scorch my wort if I wanted.

Refills cost me £14 (I think)

is it 3 or 4 brews AG, using it to heat the mash tun, HLT and boil kettle or is it 3 or 4 brews where you boil only?
