Default oxyclean residue...

hello all, I am fairly new to the site but I had a question about some oxyclean residue in my carboy. So, I used some oxyclean to clean the carboy but I guess I did not scrub good enough before I rinsed it out and transferred a fresh batch into it. I noticed that the inside surface of some of the ridges on the carboy have small white deposits of what I assume to be oxyclean powder. It does not look like too much but will this affect my outcome?? I did spray with a healthy dose of star san before I racked...

It shouldn't hurt anything. That residue is easily removed pre-Star San with a little vinegar in your rinse water. Vinegar is the only thing I have found to completely remove the film without scrubbing. You don't need a lot, just a shot in a carboy and fill with water and let sit 20 minutes or so. I always have film in my keggles after cleaning with PBW or Oxy-Clean and it gets them spotless.

ok, thanks alot.....I was just worried if I should transfer it to another carboy once one opens back up, but I guess it will be alright.

Any damage you have done (if there is any) has already been done. It is better to leave it and see the outcome. There could be head retention problems or something like that with the beer, but nothing seriously detrimental.

EDIT: I hope you are using Oxy-Clean Free for everyone reading the post, lol. If not you will scent your beer with perfume from the product.

I've had this issue with Bottles. Please let us (me) know if you end up with a "band-aid" flavor, or just a bitter profile that makes you pucker a bit. Also, if that does happen, Give it a lot of time....some of my batches that I suspect this issue on are getting much better.

I am actually using the correct oxyclean to say the least....but I will def look out for any off flavors when I keg it. thanks for the help/advice. I will just look a little closer after cleaning the carboy to make sure those deposits get rinsed out next time.

I bottled a batch once in bottles with oxyclean residue from delabeling before learning the vinegar clearing trick. There were no off flavors, but the bottles were unattractive.

What is the correct kind of OxyClean? How can I tell if the Oxyclean I got is the right kind.

Also, will star sans neutralize any reside from the oxyclean?

Oxy-Clean Free is the stuff to use. It is the one that says 101 uses on the bucket. Star-San can get the residue off too, but a shot of vinegar and 1 gallon+ water shaken and rinsed afterward is worth the comfort of knowing it worked to me. Vinegar just holds that magic in my cleaning regiment. I even use it to acidify a bleach water solution for a homemade no-rinse sanitizer sometimes. Here is an thread you might find interesting Brewmonger.
