Default My Hydrometer Is Off!

My hydrometer is about 9 points off. It measures bottled water at 0.990~0.991 at ~60*F. What the heck! I have been using it for 3 batches now. This screws everything up. Anyone else have this problem?

Many have that problem. Mine reads 4 over, just have to remember to adjust every reading and to check/calibrate every so often just to make sure things have stayed the same.

This happened to me, although not as badly. Mine was about 2 points low after a year or so of use. I think the paper inside slid down from repeatedly dropping it down into the empty hydrometer tube. I'm more gentle with them now...

Ok, one more question, is the wort density linear? In other words, will the hydrometer be light 10 points at any point on the scale?

It should be good brand new. Are you sure you are reading it correctly. 10 pts off makes me wonder is the marker line above or below the text...

I just took a closer look and the paper inside had come loose from the little bit of red glue that held it in place. I "recalibrated" it by tapping it on some newspaper on my counter. Piece of crap.
