Get the 15 gallon kettle. Can't go wrong. That is what I use and I do mainly 5 gallon batches. Got nothing to lose if you don't mind not using the thermometer.

I have a 15 gallon Polar Ware pot with the thermometer and its fine for 5 or 10 gallon batches. A five gallon batch is usually about 6.5 gallons of wort boiled down to 5.5 gallons going to the fermenter. My thermometer is right at the 5.5 gallon mark so its a good indicator of the right volume. The evaporation rate is more determined by the flame on the burner than the size of the pot so its pretty easy to control how much of a boil you want.
