Default Hydrometer Salvation

Hi All,
Being a new and cheapskate brewer, having read a lot about how many hydrometers are broken even while in storage, I thought I'd share my solution to try to help prevent hydrometer extinction in our lifetimes.

My, so far, limited experimentation led me to a pretty simple solution.

Two rubber washers (used for garden hoses) are slightly stretched over the bottom of the "fat" part and the top of the "fat" part fits nicely in the vial my hydrometer came with.

I use paper towel folded to keep the top "skinny" part from moving and hitting the side of the flask.

I haven't actually dropped or tried to break my hydrometer but, it seems happy in it's home and I think it is a lot more secure now.

Just to cover myself, take the washers off before actually using your hydrometer.

I was going to attach pictures but, I guess, I'm not allowed to.

Sounds pretty safe! I've not broken a hydrometer yet (damn, did I just jinx myself?) I've also seen some links or photos here to metal hydrometers, which seems like a good idea.

I'm on my 4th or 5th...had no problems tossing it in the plastic tube it came in...mostly broke mine handling...my luck, I'd break the thing trying to put on or take off the washers!

Putting inherently buoyant objects on a hydrometer calls for bad measurements, if you ask me.
