this is why i will be going to natgas soon. no fear of running out of fuel ;-) so far i have done 4 batchs and 4 bbq sessions. i also have a second 20lb on hand as well. for cheap readinsg one can use a scale or you can pour warm water down the side and check with your hand.

I get 5 or 6 batches on one tank.

Check out the section titled "Propane Tank Remainder Measurement" in this wiki link.

Propane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's another post I had on the matter:

I went NG with a ring burner for this very reason. I'd forget a tank and have to run to the store mid-boil. I've never used a propane burner but I surprised at how many boils you guys are getting out of a tank. I would have thought it way less- what about the BTU ratings vs number of boils and amount? I do up to 18 gallon boils...

I actually purchased one of these at Lowes. Near as I can figure, it only works with low-pressure regulators -has a leak detector and will shut off the flow if it detects a leak (supposedly) since I only have the red (high-pressure) regulators, it wouldn't allow any flow-through, and all I got out of it was a pressure reading (in the green for 'plenty' of fuel), had to take it out of the system if I wanted to use my burner.
seems odd though, that this would be the case. If I get bored enough, I'll put it back on the tank and try again -otherwise I'll just give it to my father for use with his gas grill.

Thanks for all the responses. It turns out a neighbor bought a new NG grill this past summer and had a relativley new tank (OPD tanks required in IL a couple of years ago) and gave it to me to get it out of his garage. Woo Hoo! I have 3 tanks now, 1 for grill, 2 for brewing .

BrewBeemer,
I don't honesly know! Last time I filled up, I got a 40 poudner NEW, and filled 2 old tanks, one with the new valve & 1 still with the old valve. This was at the farmers co-op so I got a reciept, but of course I didnt keep it. I'll try to remember when the bill comes next month. I'll try to see if I can pick out the propane, the bill will e over 20K ugh!
