Default Has anyone tried 'external baffles' to increase burner efficiency?

When I used to go camping, we used corrugated metal sheets that wrapped around a pot to capture some of the cooking-fuel heat and run it up along the sides of the vessel to heat our water faster. MSR has a version here: http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/cookware/cookware-accessories/heat-exchanger/product

I'm curious if anyone has tried something similar for their large stockpots. I'm not sure I can build an outdoor brewing area so I'm stuck using my LP cooktop. While the power burner reaches about 13,000 BTU, I think my 7-gallon wort will take way too long to boil, even in an all-aluminum pot, so I'm looking for ways to increase my heating efficiency.

You will definitely have problems doing a full boil with that burner. Many people use wind breaks around their burners and some people will insulate their pots with a non-flammable material like engine compartment insulation.

Ive wondered the same thing. Looking at my burner during a boil, I see a lot of heat escaping around the sides, Im sure redirecting it could prove beneficial... Add another thing to try to the list

I've seen some people build brick enclosures around the burner, no stand, and sit the pot on top of the bricks. No idea of the pros/cons of that though.

I did a boil test and my 11k burner was giving about 5300 BTU to my pot. I ran a temperature probe around the base of the pot and had 300-400F readings along the edge. So there definitely is usable heat being lost. My contractor is going to cut me some corrugated metal, which I may make into a cone shape to put around the pot so the wide base catches heat and directs it up the sides. Might line the metal with ceramic fibre cloth for extra insulation too.
