FWIW, I'm still using an immersion chiller to cool 10 gallon batches, and it still takes me almost 60 minutes to cool my wort. I'm saving up to build a CFC chiller in order to reduce my wort cooling time to 15-25 minutes.

with a cfc, does one pass take care of the cooling, or do you recirculate? Same with a shirron.. I am looking at one of the three.. (IC 40', CFC, or Shiron)

gravity feed only..

$75 for a 40 foot Immersion Chiller?

$85 for a CFC??!!!!

Jeez. I paid

$5 for a 20' garden hose in the spring (similar prices should be available now that the garden season is winding down).
$25 for 20 feet of copper tubing
$6 for a copper pipe and a couple of T-fittings
$6 for no-weld copper adhesive
$2 a couple of washer hose clamps (worm-drive clamps, whatever you call 'em)
$1.50 for a new hacksaw blade

Total time to make it: 3 hours
Cost: about $45
Time to cool and transfer 5 gallons: about 7 minutes
Advantage over IC's: you aren't transferring cooled infection-prone wort from kettle to carboy. It cools inside the tube so it isn't subjected to any bacteria until it's already in the carboy.

ok.. so do you just restrict the flow of the wort so it cools better? Is it just one pass?

It's one pass, and I use my CFC for 5 and 10 gallon batches. It takes probably 15-20 minutes to gravity feed it all the way through, but sure beats an hour with an immersion chiller.

Unless you live in AZ/TX type area where even your hose water comes out at 90 degrees, you should be fine with a single pass no pre-chiller.

All this talk is worthless without consideration of the tap temp. Yes, 50' is better than 25' but if you're tap temp is higher than 70F you'll be pissing up a rope without a prechiller or icewater recirculator.

In the winter when my tap is 55F, I used to cool 6 gallons to 65F in 10 minutes with an IC. Same chiller on 11 gallons with 75F tap took 40 minutes to hit 80F.
